You Know What News Is. Now What Do You Do With It?

Last chapter, you learned the rule.

Timely plus at least one more news element equals news.

That was the big unlock.

But here's something to think about. Knowing what news is and actually writing it β€” those are two very different things.

Think about this. You're heading home from school. A big storm floods three streets in your barangay. Nobody can pass. Parents are worried. Teachers are calling everyone.

You know that's news. You can feel it.

But how do you write that story in a way people will actually trust? In a way that informs them without confusing them or misleading them?

That's exactly what news writing is for.

News writing is the skill of reporting real events in a clear, accurate, and fair way.

It's not just typing down what happened. It's writing it so your readers can understand it quickly β€” and trust every word you say. News writing can be published online, printed in a newspaper, or posted on your school bulletin board. The format changes. The rules don't.

Why Does News Writing Matter?

News writing has three main jobs. The best stories can do all three at once.

Give readers facts they need to know right now.
"Classes at San Isidro Elementary are suspended tomorrow due to Typhoon Carina." β€” Parents need this. Without it, they might show up at school.

Educate
Help readers understand why something is important β€” not just what happened.
"The school launched a recycling program to reduce waste on campus." β€” Students learn why it matters. They might start doing it themselves.

Entertain
Write stories that make readers feel proud, happy, or inspired.
"A Grade 5 student from Maliwanag Elementary won first place in the Regional Science Fair." β€” That makes classmates feel proud. That counts too.

The Four Qualities of Good News Writing

Any news story needs four key qualities. Journalists call them the ABCs and E of news writing. Every good story must have all four.

Accuracy
Every fact in your story is correct and comes from a real, verified source. Wrong information hurts people. It can damage someone's reputation.
Ask yourself: Is this true? Who told me? Can I confirm it somewhere else?

Brevity
Keep your story short and focused. Don't use more words than you need. Say what you need to say. Then stop.
The first uses 10 words. The second uses 34. Brevity wins.

❌ Not Brief"On the morning of the day that was Monday, the school authorities, after careful consideration, decided that, due to the flooding situation, classes would not push through."

Clarity
Your story is easy to understand. Your reader never has to guess what you're saying. Use words your readers know. Organize ideas in a logical order.
The first tells you exactly what happened. The second says almost nothing.

Ethics
Writing news that is fair, honest, and responsible. Ethics is what makes journalism trustworthy β€” and it protects people from harm.

🚫No libel β€” never write something harmful and false about a person.
